The Olive Grove is slowly beginning to emerge as a new inclusive recreational space!
In cooperation with the Danish Red Cross, the Office of Displaced Designers has been facilitating a participatory design process with predominantly young men residing at Moria Camp. Through a series of workshops we are collaboratively developing activities and installations around the Olive Grove site, which is located just next to Moria Camp on Lesvos.
The primary aim for the Olive Grove is to create a safe and pleasurable space for the residents of the camp to use whilst waiting for their asylum claims to be processed. The Olive Grove is also open to the local Greek community to enjoy.
All stages of the design and construction process provide opportunities for project based learning. Participants have brainstormed ideas, discussed safety and management issues, considered the materials of the installations and over the coming weeks will be sharing and practicing basic construction skills.
We will be making improvements to the outdoor cinema that is run by a small volunteer group and will create an outdoor gym, an idea that was highly popular with the group of young men attending.
We are looking forward to continuing our work to collectively make a more useful, relevant and fun Olive Grove.
