Volunteering with ODD

Since 2016, ODD has supported displaced and marginalised communities with the help of over sixty international volunteers in roles spanning architecture, design, education, and research in the development and humanitarian sectors. We are committed to creating an inclusive and safe environment that is open to a range of ideas and approaches. We reject discrimination and racism and aim to decolonise our practices.

Some crucial aspects to be aware of:

  • We value mutual respect and exchange between volunteers and ODD. Candidate selection considers interests and academic needs, alongside role suitability. Staffing decisions prioritise community interests and project needs.

  • ODD tackles sensitive topics and offers weekly check-ins for team support. Volunteers are encouraged to consider their emotional support systems in advance.

  • Our work commonly involves a high level of uncertainty and change and volunteers must be prepared to adapt.

  • Volunteers opting to work outside of their home country will need full *travel insurance.

  • Training and equipment relevant to your role will be provided.

  • Roles involving vulnerable groups may need a *criminal background check, as specified in the role descriptions.

*If you are unable to provide insurance or undergo background checks due to displacement or marginalisation, please contact ODD before applying.

Personal information collected through applications will be treated confidentially per our Privacy and GDPR policy.

There was a lot of intimacy and trust in the way the team worked together- communication was as important as the projects themselves. If I had the chance to come back I would do it. It felt meaningful and important. I think everyone should have this mind changing experience.
